About Temple Grandin...

A Summary
Temple Grandin talks about people having autism, which is a mental disorder that prevent people from communicating properly, and talk about her belief that the world today needs people having different ways of thinking like them. First, she introduces people diagnosed with autism. The characteristic of these people is that they think using pictures in their minds instead of thinking using verbal languages. In addition, they have superior abilities to find details than normal people. She claims that animals have similar abilities with people having autism and these innate abilities to find details plays important roles in finding distractions. For example, while animals can quickly sense about problems around them, most people fail to see the problem around them. Since animal can do visual and sensory thinking, they can categorize information well and perceive something quicker than people. In addition, she suggests different types of thinking such as visual thinkers, pattern thinkers, and verbal thinkers, and explains that people miss or gets certain abilities such as drawing, math, or music according to types of thinking they have. Finally, she emphasizes on the educators' role for students having autism since if they are treated properly, they can generate grate works that needs visually thinking such as graphic design. People having autism essentially need mentors which allow students to develop unique minds and help them to be successful in their society.

A Response
Even though she talks about people having autism and their amazing abilities, I believe she wants people to think about people having different talents and abilities and the role of society to help them develop and use their innate abilities properly. As she says, depends on different types of viewing the world, they show some lack of abilities in some areas. However, I believe that in many societies, people tend to be judged by others with what they miss rather than with what people got. Therefore, people showing incapability in some areas are considered inferior and incapable than others and cannot get opportunities to show and develop their strong points in work places or society even though they got special talents. Though the speakers maintains that it is necessary for those students  to meet good mentors to make their ability to think differently developed, I believe the society are more responsible for this since their special abilities not only should  be developed by good teachers but also should be used in society. Society should make atmosphere that people can focus on strong points rather than on weak points, especially in many Asian societies which consider the difference undesirable.
